A grower's guide

Jordanian Medjool dates, from our farm.

Alnatour Farms is a family owned Medjool grower in Deir Alla, in the central Jordan Valley, about 400 metres below sea level. This guide explains how we grow, harvest, grade and pack our dates, what the five weight grades mean, and how to store and buy them.

Every Date Tells the Story of Our Land.

Jordanian Medjool at a glance

Medjool is the main date variety grown in Jordan. According to FreshPlaza (October 2026), Medjool accounts for more than 85% of the country's nearly one million date palms, most orchards are in the Jordan Valley, and about 65% of the national crop is exported.1

Our own farm sits in that valley at Deir Alla. The low altitude, warm nights and near zero rainfall while the fruit ripens are the conditions we grow in every season.

How our Medjool dates are grown

Date palms are either male or female, and only female palms bear fruit. On our farm every female palm is pollinated by hand each season, and each tree is tended individually.

Medjool dates are eaten at the tamar stage, when the fruit is soft and deep brown. Our fruit is picked by hand, without mechanical handling.

Harvest, sorting and packing

After picking, the dates go to our packing house on the farm. There they are sorted automatically by the weight of each individual date into five grades, so every box holds dates of a consistent size.

Packed dates are kept in our on site cold storage, which lets us supply buyers through the year rather than only at harvest time. Pack sizes are 250 g, 500 g, 1 kg and 5 kg bulk.

Date weight and box weight are different things

The grade describes the weight of one date. The box size describes the weight of all the dates in the box. A 1 kg box of Small dates and a 1 kg box of Super Jumbo dates weigh the same; the Small box simply holds more, smaller dates.

The table above shows roughly how many dates fit in a 1 kg box of each grade. The figures are simple arithmetic on the grade limits (1,000 g divided by the weight of one date), so a real box can differ by a date or two.

What makes Medjool dates distinctive

Medjool dates are large, soft dates with a rich, caramel like sweetness and a tender, chewy texture. They are eaten as they are, served with coffee, given as gifts and used in baking.

Because the grades are set by the weight of each date, you can choose the size that suits the use: smaller grades for recipes and everyday eating, larger grades for hosting and gifts.

How to store Medjool dates

The USDA advises keeping dates in an airtight container in the refrigerator, where they keep for about a month, and freezing them for longer storage of up to a year.2 If the container is not full, lay a thin sheet of food wrap over the dates.

Keep dates away from strong smelling foods, and let chilled dates come back to room temperature before serving for the softest texture.
